In winter, when the sun no longer rises, the landscape is bathed in the soft glow of twilight - the iconic blue hour, while the northern lights dance across the night, casting magical hues over the landscape. Even the faintest light transforms the surroundings into a breathtaking spectacle of colour. ‍

With the arrival of summer, the sun never sets. From mid-May to mid-July, the island glows under the endless midnight sun, its golden light stretching day into night - offering uninterrupted views at the edge of the world.

Sommarøy, with close to 300 inhabitants, is one of the more vibrant fishing communities in the region, where a younger generation blends modern urban influences with a strong coastal heritage.

In the neighbouring village of Brensholmen and the surrounding area, you’ll find some of the region’s oldest cultural heritage sites. Discoveries here date back to the Iron Age, and remnants of two separate Viking settlements have also been found. On Sommarøy itself, the first families settled in the 1830's as fishers and traders.

The locals are friendly, laid-back, and easy to approach. At the local shop, stories and laughter come naturally. Whether you’re here to fish, go sea kayaking, or simply stroll around, you’ll soon feel like a small part of this close-knit community.

From late September to late March, our region is ideal for hunting the Northern Lights. Sommarøy is located in a geographically optimal position, increasing your chances even when solar activity is low. It is a prime location to experience this natural wonder, far from city light pollution, giving you a better chance to witness the aurora in a spectacular way. It is easy to lose track of time and place when visiting Sommarøy, but the Northern Lights remain unpredictable; we can never guarantee the phenomenon, but with patience and good planning, your chances are high.
